Bikram Yoga of Asheville

Be on time for class. Each class is designed with a beginning, middle and end. The beginning of each class starts with a very important warming up breathing exercise and tips for beginners. The first breath you take is the most important! Make this a habit, as habits are hard to break!

Know the type of class you are attending. Come prepared mentally for what you are about to do. Please follow along to the best of your ability and work with the group. Be willing to do the posture the way we teach it at our studio as many postures are taught slightly different depending on the style of yoga and the benefit you are trying to achieve.

Be equipped with what you need to bring to class. All students must have a yoga mat, a large towel or 2 bath-size towels and plenty of drinking water. All of the above can be rented or purchased at the front desk! Alkaline, ionized, mineral rich water is complimentary next door at our Water Corner. Please NO glass bottles!

Bring into the studio room your mat, towels and water only! Do not take personal belongings into the studio room, i.e. keys, bags, cell phones, shoes, jackets, etc. We provide cubbies for your personal belongings.

Be quiet when you exit the studio room. This is practiced in respect to those who are meditating after class or enjoying quiet time. You need to allow your body AT LEAST 2-3 minutes after class to cool down before leaving the room.

When leaving the studio room after class, do not drag your mat and all your belongings behind you, but rather gather them into your arms. This is asked of to keep the noise down as you leave and to avoid creating puddles of water on the floor that may have been created from excessive detoxing. Please take extra dripping wet mats/towles directly to sidewalk outside of studio. After class used rental mats and towels go into specified hampers in each dressing room.

Let the teacher know of any injuries you have before the class begins, or any reason you may be modifying your practice. This is in respect to the teachers and students, so that a disturbance of energetic flow is not created, but rather simulated into the class.

During the class, if you need to stop for any reason, sit or lie down on your mat instead of leaving the room. You are not expected to perform everything that is offered in the classes if you are not able, but for the energetic flow created from the beginning of class, to get up and leave the room for something other than a dire emergency interrupts the established flow.

Breathe slowly in and out through your nose in all 26 postures!! Except for the 2 breathing exerices (one at the beginning and one at the end of class), and in the sit ups, you should ONLY breathe in and out through your nose. This might take a few classes to perfect.

If you know when you arrive that you must leave early for a prior commitment, let the teacher know before class begins. The teacher will then create an opportunity for you to leave. Try not to make a habit of leaving early, as habits are hard to break!

Love your neighbor, or the person you are practicing next to. He/she may need to borrow your energy for class that day.
Don’t let anything steal your peace. Keep an open mind of acceptance and non-judgment and trust the process…it works!

Help us keep our studio and yoga family a safe haven for all. Please share your experiences with each other and feel free to greet and welcome newcomers and show them around once you have been coming for a while. We all remember our first Bikram yoga class!
It’s OK to feel “weird” or different in every class. Whether it’s mental, physical, emotional or spiritual …or all of the above…it’s OK to go through many changes in the 90 minutes.  Its not about what your postures look like. Its about how you try. This is a life long journey. A yoga practice! NOT a yoga perfect! Yoga makes you….YOU ; )
